To be ex-president Donald J. Trump took, yesterday (Jan. 6th), what we all hope will be his last blow to democracy as standing president. Incited by Trump's call for justice, which aims to discredit the whole democratic system, protestors gathered in Washington to challenge Joe Bidens win. By the end of the day, four were dead: one former military who invaded the capitol building and, despite several warnings from law enforcement, continued her raid, taking a shot to the neck and three others from undisclosed medical emergencies.
As the enraged crowd swarmed around what used to be considered the epicenter of world democracy, the rest of the world watched in awe. Washington's scenes bring stark pain to all believers of the democratic system as political polarization strengthens an authoritarian regime that calls for victory through the sheer use of power.
Even after the disastrous protest and Biden`s urge for Trump to condemn violence caused by his supporters on the U.S. capitol, the soon to be former president gave a speech insisting the election was fraudulent, saying he loves his supporters and, finally, calling them to go home safely.
Trump also had, around half an hour before the Capitol was invaded, painted a gross picture about his own allies. For him, republicans who voted to maintain the democratic results secured from ballot counting are “weak” and “pathetic,” while those who voted in his favor are patriots.
In what turns to be an entirely accurate portrait of Trump, a German magazine featured the president in the Oval Office with a lighted match and called him “The Fire Devil.” That image serves to bring memories of the Reichstag fire, which happened in the German Parliament in 1933 and gave Hitler and the Nazi Party a pretext to broaden their powers over Germany.
In the aftermath of the disastrous rebellion, which only shows the world to what extent Trump is authoritarian, at least 10 people resigned from the president's declining administration. The president himself is trying to retract his attempted coup d’etat, but it can be classified no other way. He incited violence against congress in an attempt to change democratic results. After realizing only a minority was by his side, he understood it was a failed attempt and gave speeches condemning those who went beyond the law. Without a doubt, Trump's tactics can be associated with those of hybrid warfare, commonly used by the military to destabilize governments and promote riots.
Realizing the attempted coup, lawmakers are calling for the immediate impeachment of President Trump. Long coming, his Twitter account has finally been suspended in an attempt to prevent further damages to American society. For the first time, even his capacity to possess nuclear codes is now being challenged.
Watching from another country, Trump makes for entertaining but increasingly dangerous news. His unprecedented Machiavellianism shows his belief that the means justify the ends and that he is willing to risk it to maintain what he believes is best for the country: himself. So, even though Trump has few days left in power, we would like to think this was his last blow to democracy, but we would not doubt it isn’t.
